Fluoroscopy-Guided Injections

Real-time X-ray imaging allows our specialists to perform precise, minimally invasive spine and joint treatments with exceptional accuracy. Using continuous visualization, we can guide needles and therapeutic agents directly to the source of pain, improving both safety and outcomes. Typical procedures include facet injections, medial branch blocks, epidurals, nerve root blocks, and joint aspirations or injections. Appointments are quick, image-guided, and designed to minimize discomfort while maximizing clinical effectiveness.

About the service

What is Fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that uses continuous X-ray technology to create real-time video images of the interior of the body. Unlike a standard X-ray that produces a single image, fluoroscopy captures a dynamic sequence, making it ideal for observing motion within the body—such as the movement of joints.

How It Works

During a fluoroscopy exam, the patient may be asked to stand, sit, or lie down, depending on the area being examined. A continuous X-ray beam passes through the body and is captured by a detector, which displays the live images on a monitor. In many cases, a contrast dye is introduced into the body to highlight specific organs or structures, enhancing visibility and diagnostic clarity.

Modern fluoroscopy equipment uses digital detectors to ensure minimal radiation exposure and improve image quality. Technicians and radiologists ensure patient safety by using the lowest possible dose and protective measures during the procedure.

Fluoroscopy-Guided Procedures Currently Offered by OGI

OGI is currently offering the following fluoroscopy-guided procedures:

  • Lumber Facet Block: A minimally invasive injection to relieve lower back pain originating from the facet joints.
  • Cervical Facet Block: Targeted injection to reduce neck pain caused by cervical facet joint irritation.
  • Epidural: Targeted injection into the spinal canal to alleviate pain and inflammation in the back or legs.
  • Joint Injections: Targeted injections into joints to reduce pain and inflammation while improving mobility.

Preparation and Safety

Preparation for fluoroscopy depends on the type of exam. It’s important to inform the technologist of any allergies, especially to contrast dye, iodine, or latex, as well as if you're pregnant or may be pregnant.

Fluoroscopy-guided procedures may involve exposure to a small amount of ionizing radiation. While the risk is minimal, especially with modern low-dose systems, all precautions are taken to limit exposure. The benefit of accurate, real-time imaging often outweighs the minimal risk, especially when fluoroscopy guides critical medical decisions or procedures.
